Bidding is set next month for the first time on leases of wind farm sites in the Gulf of Mexico. The federal government announced on Thursday the upcoming bidding for three parcels, including two that are about 30 miles off the Texas coast near Galveston. Renewable energy companies as well as oil and gas firms are expected to compete for the leases. The auction is scheduled for August 29th. Environmental groups are concerned about the damage the construction and operation of the windmills might do to birds and sea life.
