The San Antonio Police Department expects to add 360 officers over the next three to five years. Danny Diaz, president of the San Antonio Police Officers' Association, says the enhanced numbers will help them become more proactive rather than reactive in dealing with crime. The SAPD says patrol officers spend 60-percent of their time responding to calls, and the other 40-percent involved in community-based crime prevention. The department hopes to reverse those numbers.
