A Houston police helicopter crashed into an apartment complex early today, killing one officer and injuring another. The crash occurred at the Biscayne At Cityview Apartment complex on the city's north side.
Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner says one officer died in the crash and the other officer is now in surgery. No one in the apartment complex was injured.
"Lift up the entire HPD family, the Houston Police Department, because it is a family, that extended family, so lift them up. This is a sad morning," said Turner.
Police Chief Art Acevedo says the wreckage was so mangled it took Houston Fire Department rescuers more than an hour to get the officers' out.
