South San Voters say NO to Higher Taxes

The South San Antonio ISD gave a resounding 'no' to higher property taxes on Tuesday, overwhelmingly defeating a proposed increase in the tax rate to make up for declining enrollment, News Radio 1200 WOAI reports.

The vote wasn't even close, 57% against to 42% in favor, in a very low turnout election.

Like many urban districts, South San is suffering from declining enrollment as younger families move to newer parts of the city and the population ages.

The District hasn't said what happens now, but it had said the purpose of the proposed tax increase was to avoid layoffs and program cuts.

The San Antonio ISD, facing similar problems of declining enrollment, made some very controversial staff reductions over the summertime.
